📈 Why break-even ROAS matters
A 'good-looking' ROAS can still lose money, because ROAS counts revenue, not profit. Judge Actual ROAS against Break-even ROAS on the same card: above break-even means profitable ads, below means you lose money even if the ROAS number looks high. Enter an ad spend per order above and watch the verdict change.
Benchmark, guidance only: there is no universal “good ROAS” — compare Actual ROAS to break-even on the same card, not to a fixed 2x or 3x.

Max CAC, in plain words: the most you can spend on ads for one order before you start losing money. Example, Shopify above: Max CAC $19.18 — with $5.00 ad spend you keep $14.18; spend $19.18 and you break even at $0; spend $20 and you lose $0.82 on that order, even though you made a sale.
Actual ROAS, in plain words: actual revenue divided by actual ad spend, per order. Actual ROAS 10.00x means for every $1 of ad spend, you get $10 of sales revenue — for example $3.50 ad spend and $35.00 revenue. It is revenue, not profit: compare it with Break-even ROAS on the same card. Above break-even = ads are profitable; below break-even = ads lose money, even if ROAS looks high. If ad spend is $0, Actual ROAS shows —, not a number.

Target price is approximate: raising price also raises percentage fees, so the exact 40% price is slightly higher. Monthly profit = net profit per order × orders per month. 40% price = the selling price that would leave 40% gross margin before ads at your current costs and fees. If it is below your current price, you already beat 40%; if above, that is how high you would need to go to reach 40%. 40% is a healthy-margin example, not a rule. Break-even price = the selling price where profit is $0.

📊 How it works
Follow the money, step by step:
1💰 Revenue — Price + shipping charged
↓ minus
2➖ Product cost
↓ minus
3➖ Shipping cost
↓ minus
4➖ Platform fee
↓ minus
5➖ Ad spend
↓ equals
6✅ Net profit
Then check your ads:
1Net profit + ad spend = Gross profit
↓ divide by revenue
2Gross profit ÷ Revenue = Margin %
↓ invert
31 ÷ Margin % = Break-even ROAS
Max CAC = Gross profit. If ad spend per order is higher than Max CAC, you lose money on that order — even if ROAS looks high.
Example — one $34.99 Shopify sale with $5.00 ad spend, visual split:
Cost
Fee
Ad
Net
🟧 Cost $14.50 (41.4%) 🟦 Fee $1.31 (3.7%) 🟣 Ad $5.00 (14.3%) 🟩 Net $14.18 (40.5%) — Total $34.99 (percentages rounded)
ROAS rule, visual: ❌ Below break-even (e.g. 1.82x for this Shopify example) = losing money on ads | ✅ Above break-even = profitable ads.

Net profit = price + shipping charged − product cost − shipping cost − platform fee − ad spend. Gross profit before ads = net profit + ad spend. Margin % = gross profit ÷ revenue. Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ margin %. Actual ROAS = revenue ÷ ad spend, when ad spend > 0.
Shopify (via Shopify Payments, Basic): 2.9% × (price + shipping charged) + $0.30. Plans $39 / $105 Grow / $399 per month are not in per-order profit — v1 profit is “before monthly plan cost”. Third-party gateway adds 2% on Basic.
Etsy: $0.20 + 6.5% + 3% + $0.25 = 9.5% × (price + shipping charged) + $0.45, before Offsite Ads (15% under $10k/365 days, 12% at $10k+, capped at $100, excluded from v1).
Amazon FBA: referral (default 15%, 15% in most categories; 8% electronics, 17% clothing above $20, 20% jewelry, 45% device accessories) × (price + shipping charged, excluding tax) + manual FBA fee. Default $3.57 = $3.45 small-standard + $0.12 (3.5% surcharge since 17 Apr 2026). Peak 15 Oct 2026–14 Jan 2027 ~$0.21 (small-standard). Storage, inbound and aged-inventory surcharges excluded.
Locked test case: $34.99 / $14.50, no shipping/ads → Shopify $19.18, Etsy $16.72, Amazon $11.67 (peak $11.46). Fees checked 29 Oct 2026.
❓ Frequently asked questions
Tap a question to see the answer.
🧮 What is a seller profit calculator?
A seller profit calculator shows what you actually keep after product cost, shipping, platform fees and ad spend — not just your selling price.
📈 What is break-even ROAS?
Break-even ROAS is 1 ÷ your gross margin %. At 40% margin, break-even ROAS is 2.5x. Below that, you are losing money on ads even if ROAS looks positive.
🎯 What is Max CAC?
Max CAC is the most you can spend to get one order — on ads — before you lose money. It equals your gross profit before ads. Example: if gross profit is $19.18, spending $10 per order leaves $9.18, spending $19.18 breaks even, and spending $20 loses $0.82 on that order.
💰 What is Actual ROAS?
Actual ROAS is your actual revenue divided by your actual ad spend, per order. 10.00x means $10 of sales revenue for every $1 of ad spend — for example $3.50 ad spend and $35.00 revenue. It is revenue, not profit, so always compare it with Break-even ROAS: above break-even is profitable, below break-even loses money even if the number looks high.
🎨 How are Etsy fees calculated?
In this calculator: $0.20 listing + 6.5% transaction + 3% + $0.25 payment processing, before Offsite Ads.
📦 How are Amazon FBA fees calculated?
Referral fee (15% in most categories; 8% electronics, 17% clothing above $20, 20% jewelry, 45% device accessories, on price + shipping charged, excluding tax) plus a manual FBA fee, default $3.57 for a small-standard item including the 3.5% surcharge. FBA fees vary by size, weight and price band, which is why v1 asks you to enter your fee.
🔑 Do I need an account to use this calculator?
No. It is free, with no login and no signup, and all calculations run in your browser.
⚠️ Why can a 'good-looking' ROAS still lose money?
Because ROAS is revenue divided by ad spend. A 2x ROAS on a 33% margin product is below its 3.00x break-even, so every order loses money despite the 2x headline.
🔍 What is the difference between break-even ROAS, Actual ROAS and Max CAC?
Break-even ROAS is the hurdle (1 ÷ margin %). Actual ROAS is what you got (revenue ÷ ad spend). Max CAC is the most you can spend per order before losing money, which is gross profit before ads.
📋 Worked example — the same ad spend, two different answers
Start from the locked numbers (price $34.99, cost $14.50, no shipping) and add $5.00 ad spend per order.
Shopify: gross profit $19.18, break-even ROAS 1.82x, Max CAC $19.18, net profit $14.18. Actual ROAS = $34.99 ÷ $5.00 = 7.00x, above 1.82x, so ads are profitable on Shopify at that spend. Amazon: gross profit $11.67, break-even ROAS 3.00x, net profit $6.67 — also above break-even, but with far less headroom. Raise ad spend to $12.00 and Shopify still nets $7.18, while Amazon nets −$0.33.
❓ ROAS questions
Why can a 'good-looking' ROAS still lose money? Because ROAS is revenue divided by ad spend. A 2x ROAS on a 33% margin product is below its 3.00x break-even, so every order loses money despite the 2x headline.
What is the difference between break-even ROAS, Actual ROAS and Max CAC? Break-even ROAS is the hurdle (1 ÷ margin %). Actual ROAS is what you got (revenue ÷ ad spend). Max CAC is the most you can spend per order before losing money, which is gross profit before ads.
📖 Methodology, in short
Net profit = price + shipping charged − product cost − shipping cost − platform fee − ad spend. Gross margin % = gross profit before ads ÷ revenue. Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ gross margin %. Max CAC = gross profit before ads. Amazon referral is on price + shipping charged (excluding tax), updated 28 Oct 2026. Full fee table, diagram and launch checklist are on the home page: Methodology. Fees are web-search findings from 27–28 Oct 2026, not official-page checks — re-check against official Shopify, Etsy and Amazon pages and date-stamp before launch.
This will clear your current inputs and return to the defaults: price $34.99, cost $14.50, shipping charged $0, shipping cost $0, ad spend $5.00, orders per month 100, referral 15%, FBA fee $3.57.
